Robyn Williams has decades of experience in the publishing and communications sectors. She began her career as a staff writer for Australasian Business Intelligence, moving on to become a senior editor with Lexis Nexis (Reed Elsevier), one of the world’s leading legal and business publishers. At this time, Robyn was also an editor for Essence (the official magazine of the Australian Breastfeeding Association) and a writer for Melbourne Child. Robyn has retained her strong interest in legal publishing and editing. In 2017, she won the IPEd prize for her essay on changes in defamation laws and how they may affect editors and the broader publishing sector.

Robyn’s experience as an in-house editor has given her a holistic view of the publishing process, from concept development to pre-press processes. Her background in the demanding and niche world of legal editing prepared Robyn well for academic editing, an area in which she has extensive experience. Robyn has worked with Dr Lines for over ten years in Australia’s finest academic editing companies as a senior editor and trainer. She has personally edited hundreds of theses, and has advised on referencing guides and university style manuals.

Robyn has also worked in the communications field, as a media advisor for Monash University and a communications manager for the Monash Warwick Alliance, an international, interdisciplinary partnership between Australia’s largest university and the prestigious University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. In these roles, Robyn worked closely with complex scientific and medical papers to produce relatable content for media and university publications. Her experience in academic editing gave Robyn an in-depth understanding of academic conventions, the importance of accurate funding and author attributions, and greater knowledge of the international higher education sector.

As a professional who learned the ropes as an in-house editor, Robyn brings decades of experience and practical publishing knowledge to her role as Assistant Director of Capstone Editing. She is a member of Writers Victoria and Editors Victoria, and is committed to ongoing professional development.
